Current  transformers are required for 3 Phase Meters when a installation's current  is 100amps plus. 
A standard transformer is round in shape and the wiring goes through the centre, two wires from the lugs of the transformer 
wire into the meter. 
Should installation be a problem due to location, or inability to switch off,  Split Core Transformers offer an ease of installation
